End of 2017 Review
I cannot believe I’m saying this, but another year is about to end! It seems like only a few weeks ago we were wishing a Happy New Year and promising to get into shape, only to fall foul of those last few mince pies…
2017 has been a mixed bag for the Social Care Sector and Recruitment in general. We started with the news that the IR35 reforms were being rushed into practice, without any real thought or guidance from HMRC. After months of letters, open meetings and feedback, our advice (along with many other companies) fell on deaf ears. We told the Government that Social Workers would vote with their feet if things weren’t implemented properly and we have see a massive spike in vacancies this year because of it.
Funding for Social Care
More positively the Government did pledge £2bn funding for Social Care as a starting point. Something for us all to look forward to, meaning critical services for Adults and Children’s social care, would get the funding they so desperately need and deserve. We were disappointed to not see anything further in the recent Budget, but we remain positive that more is on the way for our Social Services and critical services for vulnerable children and adults.
Criminal Finances Act 2017
For recruiters, many more changes to how we work were introduced, with none more concerning than the Criminal Finances Act 2017 which came into force at the end of September. As a reputable agency, we have always advised our candidates to work with compliant intermediaries, making sure we do our own due diligence, to avoid the contractor getting a nasty shock later down the line. However, with the introduction of this law, we decided we had to set up a PSL of FCSA accredited companies. They are all excellent of course and work to very high standards.
This year, we decided to be more social! No, not going out and getting drunk in high end bars and restaurants together…Social Media! We have always tried to connect with our candidates more than other agencies might, but we felt the time was right to introduce a new side to us. Our personal side, so you get to see the consultants behind the business branding. We have so far built a successful Instagram account, along with an ever-growing twitter following, with lots of blogs being written to pass on advice, our thoughts but also showing some of our passions as people.
2017 brought Ric Marshall into the business. A consultant with more than 5 years’ experience working in the permanent IT market, Ric has built and developed our permanent division this year, with more and more clients using us than ever before. We’ve seen a very strong end to the year and with our continuously strong locum division, 2018 will see us grow substantially to ensure we cover more vacancies, more clients and more areas for our candidates.
Finally, thank you to all our social workers who have used our services this year and who continue to work long hours and put their passion into this amazing sector. A personal thank you from me, to everyone, not only involved with Sheldon Phillips, but Social Care as a whole. You all do a fantastic job and I’m sure 2018 will be a prosperous year for us all.
Have a Merry Christmas and an even Happier New Year
