Locum Social Worker – Safeguarding & Assessment
Location: Bourne Hill Council Offices, Wiltshire
Rate: £38.00 per hour (Umbrella)
Contract: Full-time, Locum (initial 3–6 months, likely to extend)
Working Pattern: Hybrid – 2 days per week in the office, remainder remote
Start Date: ASAP
Wiltshire Council is seeking an experienced Locum Social Worker to join their Safeguarding and Assessment Team, based at Bourne Hill in Salisbury. This role is ideal for a skilled practitioner who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about delivering high-quality, child-centred social work.
You will be responsible for undertaking statutory assessments, responding to safeguarding concerns, and progressing cases through Child in Need, Child Protection, and Legal Planning processes. The team benefits from strong managerial oversight, realistic caseloads, and a supportive working culture.
Complete assessments under Section 17 and Section 47 of the Children Act 1989
Respond to safeguarding referrals and assess immediate and ongoing risk
Develop clear and effective plans to support children and families
Work closely with multi-agency partners to coordinate interventions
Attend strategy discussions, child protection conferences, and court as required
To be considered, you must have:
A recognised social work qualification and current Social Work England registration
Significant experience in safeguarding, assessment, and statutory children’s services
Confidence managing complex cases and making defensible decisions under pressure
Strong written and verbal communication skills
The ability to work independently within a collaborative team environment
Competitive rate of £38.00 per hour (umbrella)
Hybrid working model – only 2 days per week in-office
Easily accessible central location at Bourne Hill Council Offices, Salisbury
