Duty and Assessment | Wigan | £39 per hour

Wigan Council is looking for an experienced Social Worker to join its Duty and Assessment team on a locum basis. This is a strong opportunity for a confident practitioner who can manage fast-paced frontline work, complete robust assessments, and make sound decisions to safeguard children and support families at the earliest stage.

This role would suit a Social Worker with solid frontline statutory experience, strong assessment skills, and the ability to work decisively within a busy Duty and Assessment setting.

Role Overview

As part of the Duty and Assessment team, you will be responsible for completing timely assessments, responding to referrals, and making clear recommendations to ensure children and families receive the right level of support and intervention. You will need to be confident in managing risk, engaging families, and working closely with partner agencies to deliver effective safeguarding outcomes.

Key responsibilities

  • Undertake Child and Family Assessments in line with statutory timescales
  • Manage referrals and complete timely screening and decision-making
  • Carry out Section 47 enquiries where required
  • Develop clear plans that reflect risk, need, and desired outcomes
  • Work closely with partner agencies including schools, health, and police
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date case recordings and reports
  • Attend strategy meetings, child protection conferences, and relevant court work where needed

Requirements

  • Social Work England registration
  • Social Work qualification
  • Previous experience within a Duty and Assessment or frontline safeguarding team
  • Strong knowledge of current safeguarding legislation and statutory guidance
  • Ability to manage a busy caseload and work effectively under pressure
  • Enhanced DBS
