Sheldon Phillips are working with a supportive and forward-thinking Head of Service at Birmingham Children’s Trust to recruit two Senior Practitioners in Learning to join their expanding Learning Academy. These newly created roles follow the success of the first SPiL post introduced earlier this year, and form part of Birmingham’s ongoing investment in workforce development and practice improvement.
As a Senior Practitioner in Learning, you will take on a non–case holding role focused on the professional development of social workers across Children’s Services. Working alongside a dedicated Team Manager and Head of Service, you will design, deliver and review training modules for both new and experienced practitioners—helping to embed consistent, high-quality social work practice across the Trust.
Non–case holding role within the Learning Academy
Design and deliver Social Work learning modules for induction-style events of up to 300 practitioners
Initially focus on the Front Door and Assessment Service, before moving into Safeguarding
Support the Trust’s transition to a new practice model aligned with Family Hubs
Work under the guidance of a hands-on Team Manager and supportive Head of Service
Flexible hybrid working arrangements, typically 2 days in office
Develop and deliver engaging learning and development programmes for Social Workers
Identify practice development needs across frontline and safeguarding teams
Share learning from pilot schemes and national best practice to strengthen local delivery
Support social work induction and practice development events
Collaborate with managers to ensure training reflects service priorities and current legislation
Provide reflective support and guidance to Social Workers and ASYEs
SWE Registration
Social Work qualification
Significant post-qualified experience in frontline Children and Families services
Experience delivering training, mentoring or supervision to social work staff
Practice Educator qualification desirable but not essential
Excellent communication, presentation, and organisational skills
Full-time commitment required (37 hours per week)
Flexible hybrid model – 2 days in the office depending on training commitments
£33.30 per hour (in line with MOU rate cap)
Long notice periods can be accommodated for the right candidate
Potential for the role to become permanent within the next 12 months
